Dr. Vinay Jacob is a qualified and accomplished Senior Plastic Surgeon practicing at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences at Mumbai in India. He achieved his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in 1991 from the leading Indian Institute of St. Johns Medical College in Bangalore in 1991, and subsequently his Master in Surgery (MS) from the renowned and internationally acclaimed Tata Memorial Hospital at Mumbai in 1996.
Dr. Jacob has conferred the Honors with Distinction in the degrees of the Magister Chirurgiae (MCh) and the Diplomate of the National Board (DNB) in Plastic Surgery in 2001.
A decade of international travels to centers of absolute excellence and training in high volume, quality aesthetic surgery work, have led him to accumulate a wealth of experience and seen him exemplify his mastery in aesthetic cosmetic surgery.
A huge amount of this work entailed aesthetic breast surgery which includes the entire gamut of augmentation, reduction, mastopexy or breast lift, breast asymmetry, tuberous breasts, whole breast, and oncoplastic breast reconstructions. Additional procedures commonly undertaken by Dr. Jacob include body contouring surgery such as liposuctions, mini and full tummy tucks, mommy makeovers, wedding preparatory surgeries, and body lifts after Massive Weight Loss.
He also addresses issues pertaining to men that include male breast reduction surgeries for gynecomastia, hair transplants for the male pattern of baldness as well as genital enhancement in the male and chest wall implants, and abdominal etching for the six-pack abs look.
For women, asides the breast and body contouring, he has to offer advanced breast surgery, vaginal aesthetic surgery, facial rejuvenation surgery such as the short scar MACS facelift, dark circles, rhinoplasty (nose jobs), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and fat grafting for various deformities.
Asides from Aesthetic Surgery, his special interests are in the management of Difficult and Challenging Reconstructions in Plastic Surgery. He provides state-of-the-art solutions for the many Head and Neck/Torso/Extremity defects, including Hand and Tendon-Nerve Surgery, Breast Surgery, Micro Vascular Surgery (Hand/Lower Limb/Trauma/Onco Surgery), Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Burns, Diabetic, Pressure Sores and the complicated and perplexing non-healing and difficult wounds, including Diabetic Ulcers, treatment of skin malignancies and scar revision, Ear Lobe Repairs and the various Non-Surgical Skin Care programs.
In his quest for bringing newer technology in his field to the country, Dr. Jacob proceeded for long-term Advanced Super-Speciality Training in niche Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery sub-specialities for almost seven years under the tutelage of world masters in pioneering and cutting-edge, world-renowned centers of excellence in Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Greece, and the United Kingdom.
Dr. Vinay Jacob took his plastic surgical skills to the next level under his mentor and guide, Prof. Dr. Giorgio De Santis at Modena with two back-to-back Specialized Advanced Micro-vascular Surgery and Lab based Stem Cell Research Full Term Fellowships at the Policlinico di Modena (University Public Hospital of Modena) of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) in Italy.
The Policlinico di Modena of the UNIMORE, in Northern Italy is a world center of Breast Surgery as well as Reconstructive Hand and Micro Surgery. In fact, the symbol of the entire university is a ‘HAND’. It also conducts state-of-the-art Stem Cell Research and works under Prof. Dr. Massimo Domenici, with whose team, Dr. Vinay continues to be involved since 2004-05.
The university is steeped in history and is amongst the oldest universities of the world, founded in 1175 AD and famed for esteemed works of medical importance ranging from that of Gabriele Falloppio, (known for his study and description of many structures inside the ear and neighboring regions as well as the Fallopian Tube). The city itself is renowned for many things including the Balsamic Vinegar, the home of the Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, and the Ducati on their wheels, and the music and tenor of Luciano Pavarotti!
Aesthetic Surgery training needs one to move to specialized centers doing exceptional work and Dr. Jacob has traveled the length and breadth of Europe towards this, spending quality time with proficient masters at various centers in Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Milan, Frankfurt, Berlin, Thessaloniki, Athens, Lyon, Florence, and Pisa.
He then went on to the United Kingdom as the very last recipient of the very highly competitive and acclaimed Royal College of Surgeons International Surgeons Fellowship for the senior surgical cadre. This Fellowship gave him full registration with the General Medical Council of the UK, as well as bequeathed credence to his training at Queen Victoria Hospital at East Grinstead in West Sussex, England.
The Queen Victoria Hospital is a comprehensive plastic surgery facility under one roof and is hailed as a world center for Hand and Breast Surgery, Head and Neck, and Maxillo-Facial Surgery (of Mr. Peter Wardbooth), as well as the first center in the world, to set up a Burns Unit under the guidance of Prof. Archibald Mc Indoe in the Pre-World War II era.
This burn center was necessitated as it was pre-empted that the eminent world war would entail many flying accidents and pilots with burn injuries will require burn care and management far away from the hustle of London, and this was absent in that era. It is thus, one of the birthplaces of plastic and reconstructive surgery in the world!
Dr. Jacob declares it as his privilege to have been trained in the hallowed portals of this institution under stalwarts such as Mr. Nicholas Parkhouse, Mr. John Periera, Mr. Harry Belcher, Mr. Philip Gilbert, Mr. Paul Banwell, Mr. TC Teo, Mr. Martin Jones, Mr. Baljit Dheansa, Mr. Mark Pickford and Mr. Sam Orkar. He humbly acknowledges – “Thank You All.”
Dr. Jacob has ever since, returned to India and has been a Consultant Plastic (Aesthetic and Reconstructive) Surgeon in Mumbai and other metropolis cities of India since 2009.
His flair and love for teaching the subject are reflected in his academic attachments that he holds as an Honorary Associate Professor at the Grant Government Medical College which is again, the oldest Medical Institute of the country and has one of the earliest and the most glorious departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the country. To date, 32 plastic students have been trained by him directly at his teaching hospital attachments and many of the young registrars in training attend his sessions from the other teaching departments of Mumbai, as well as from the neighboring cities.
During his training abroad, he has trained in the very nascent and developing field of Composite Tissue Allotransplantation (CTA), which is currently seeing the development of FACE AND HAND TRANSPLANTS in barely a handful of centers in the world. He has structured and helped describe the face harvest techniques along with his colleagues, Drs. Alessio Baccarani, Massimo Pinelli, and Antonio Pedone with the Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA.
He is also the first person in India to undertake a Vascularized Epiphyseal Microvascular Transfer, a very special subset of microsurgery that is essential in a growing child for a case of TM Joint Ankylosis (fused jaw). He acknowledges this for his training from another fine innovator of microsurgery, Prof. Marco Innocenti, from Florence, Italy.
Incidentally, Dr. Jacob is also a qualified Onco (Cancer) Surgeon who trained at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and Bangalore for almost 6 years. Though he has, out of personal choice, let go of this specialty in his practice, he uses the training and expertise to excellently place in perspective the various reconstructive options following cancer tissue ablation surgery as well as in difficult congenital, traumatic or infective tissue wounds and injuries that present in a plastic surgery outpatient regularly.
